Achille e Pier Giacomo Castiglioni | 1962

“Taccia” by Achille Castiglioni – designed in 1962, this table lamp features a distinctive reflector that directs light upwards and is now part of the permanent collection at the Museum of Modern Art in New York.

〉Assume you are the designer Achille and Pier Giacomo Castiglioni. Describe in a list what are the highlights of your design

〈 The highlights of my design philosophy include:

  1. Functionality and simplicity: I believe that design should serve a purpose and solve problems in the simplest way possible.
  2. Innovation and experimentation: I constantly seek new and creative ways to approach design challenges, and I am not afraid to experiment with unconventional materials or techniques.
  3. Attention to context: I design with a deep understanding of the context in which the object will be used, including its cultural and social implications.
  4. Humor and irony: I believe that design can be playful and humorous, and I often incorporate these elements into my work.
  5. Sustainability: I strive to create designs that are environmentally sustainable, using materials and processes that minimize waste and pollution.

〉You are asked to design an table lamp in 2023 with these main feature:

  1. Made of two main parts: a large, shallow bowl and a base that contains the lamp’s electrical components
  2. The lamp is dimmable, allowing users to adjust the brightness of the light as needed
  3. Sleek, minimalist design and use of high-quality materials Give a name in Achille Castiglioni style to your project.

Describe the design of the main feautres. Create also a description of your project in terms of: Sustainability, Technological Innovation, Inclusiveness, Shape and Materials. Your design approach must include your design philosophy. Write an element of the context including its cultural and social implications working in 2023 that inspire the project.

Thank you for the project brief. As Achille Castiglioni, my design philosophy is centered on functionality, experimentation, context, playfulness, and sustainability. For this project, I will design a table lamp that combines simplicity, versatility, and elegance.

The name of the lamp will be Bolla which means “bubble” in Italian. The lamp’s design is inspired by the idea of a bubble, which is round, soft, and translucent. I believe that this design will create a timeless piece that can blend into any interior décor.

The lamp is made of two main parts: a large, shallow bowl and a base that contains the lamp’s electrical components. The bowl is made of a heat-resistant, translucent material such as blown glass or acrylic, which allows light to diffuse evenly and create a warm, ambient glow. The base is made of metal or high-quality plastic, which provides stability and durability. The lamp’s simple design allows for easy assembly and disassembly, making it easy to transport and store.

The lamp is dimmable, allowing users to adjust the brightness of the light as needed. This feature adds versatility to the lamp, making it suitable for various settings such as homes, offices, and restaurants. The lamp’s dimming function is easy to operate, either through a touch sensor or a remote control.

The lamp’s sleek, minimalist design and use of high-quality materials make it an ideal piece for modern interiors. The lamp’s round shape and soft lighting create a calming atmosphere, perfect for relaxation or intimate settings.

In terms of sustainability, the lamp’s design uses materials and processes that minimize waste and pollution. The lamp’s bowl is made of a recyclable and eco-friendly material, which can be reused or repurposed. The lamp’s base is made of high-quality, durable material, which reduces the need for frequent replacements.

Technologically, the lamp’s design is simple, yet effective. The lamp’s dimming function is enabled by an energy-efficient LED bulb, which consumes less energy than traditional bulbs. The lamp’s assembly process is also simple, making it easy to manufacture and reduce production costs.

Inclusiveness is a core element of my design philosophy. The Bolla lamp is designed to be accessible to everyone, regardless of their age, gender, or physical abilities. The lamp’s simple design and dimming function make it easy to operate and adjust, ensuring that everyone can use it comfortably.

In terms of cultural and social context, the Bolla lamp is inspired by the growing trend of minimalist and sustainable interior design. In 2023, people are becoming more aware of the environmental impact of their choices, and they are looking for products that are both beautiful and eco-friendly. The Bolla lamp’s design reflects this trend, providing an elegant and sustainable solution for modern interiors.
